The word ‘colloquium’ is derived from two Latin words

col’, meaning ‘together’, and ‘loqui’, meaning ‘to talk’. Combined as ‘colloqui’, the term conveys the idea of conversation or dialogue. The word ‘colloquium’ emerged in the 16th century to describe a focused discussion centered on a single subject, aimed at achieving in-depth understanding. By adding the abbreviation for neonatology, ‘Neo’, the term ‘Neocolloquium’ was coined to denote an in-depth discussion of a specific topic in neonatology.

Neocolloquia were initiated in Pakistan as system-oriented annual international conferences by the Department of Neonatology, University of Child Health Sciences, The Children’s Hospital, Lahore—the country’s leading tertiary care neonatal unit. The first Neocolloquium was held on 25th January 2020 that focused respiratory problems in neonates. Since then, the conference has been organized annually, each year dedicated to comprehensive exploration of a selected topic in neonatology. Salient features of the conference include expert presentations by renowned national and international neonatologists, research paper presentations, and scientific exhibitions showcasing both established and emerging advances for the benefit of participants. Over the years, Neocolloquium has become the most sought-after and the largest-attended neonatology conference in the country, attracting neonatologists, paediatricians, postgraduate medical trainees, and nursing professionals.

In addition to respiratory disorders, successive Neocolloquia have focused on neonatal neurology, infections, gastroenterology, and nutrition. In 2026, the chosen theme is ‘Endocrine Problems of Neonates’.
